Workplace Charging Scheme for warehouses

How warehouse and depot sites should read Workplace Charging Scheme eligibility before they count sockets.

By Local EV Installers Editorial Team · Published · Updated

The Workplace Charging Scheme is for staff and fleet parking at a workplace, not a public rapid hub and not automatically every socket in a warehouse yard. Eligibility, socket caps and the voucher value are set on GOV.UK and change. A warehouse can be a perfectly sensible site when employees or company vans park there and the applicant is the kind of organisation the scheme allows. It is a poor fit if the bays are for customers, the public, or HGVs that need a depot design the scheme does not fund.

Workplace Charging Scheme for warehouses

Separate staff car bays from loading positions for artics. A 7 kW AC socket does not turn a trailer park into a charging strategy for heavy vehicles.

  • Staff and fleet parking, not a public forecourt
  • Check the live cap and voucher
  • Yard power is often the real cost
  • HGVs are a different project

Check workplace Charging Scheme for warehouses before you accept a price

Check parking tenure, the electrical capacity of the unit, and whether the landlord or the tenant must apply. A leased warehouse often needs the landlord in the conversation.

The price effect of workplace Charging Scheme for warehouses

The voucher is a contribution per socket up to the scheme cap. The supply upgrade, the trench across a yard and the load management are often the larger bills. Price those before you count the maximum sockets.

A miss that shows up later: workplace Charging Scheme for warehouses

The mistake is applying for the maximum sockets for a shift pattern that only needs four, or assuming a warehouse is excluded because it is not an office.

Frequently asked questions

Can night staff use the bays?

If they are entitled workplace users under the scheme and your policy, yes. The scheme is not a retail offer to passing drivers.

Do we need OCPP?

Not always for a small staff set. You do need a way to stop sockets being abused if the yard is open. That may be RFID, an app or a barrier.

What if the unit is rented?

Confirm who may claim and who owns the kit when the lease ends.

Are 22 kW posts better in a yard?

Only if the supply and the vehicles can use them. Many vans are happy on 7 kW overnight.
