Integral garages tempt everyone to drill straight out. That is fine when the consumer unit is on the garage wall and the bay is beside it. It is a longer design when the meter is at the front door and the parking is on the far side of a finished room. Routes are: surface containment, a chase, a loft path with the right cable method, or out and around the elevation. Each has a cost and a visual result. Pick it on purpose.

Cabling an EV charger above or beside an integral garage
Note loft insulation. A cable buried in insulation may need to be sized differently or clipped where it can cool.
- Short routes through the garage wall are the easy case
- Loft routes must respect insulation and heat
- Fire lining needs proper stopping
- Trunking across living space should be a choice
What a survey must prove about cabling an EV charger above or beside an integral garage
Agree holes through garage fire lining. Stuffing a gap around a cable with a tea towel is not fire stopping.
Cabling an EV charger above or beside an integral garage and the written scope
The route is a visible part of the price. A cheap install that crosses the lounge in trunking will not feel cheap for long.
The expensive shortcut on cabling an EV charger above or beside an integral garage
The mistake is a lead under the garage door every night because nobody wanted to pay for the last five metres.
Handover when cabling an EV charger above or beside an integral garage is the issue
Mark the route on a plan before acceptance.
Frequently asked questions
Can the tether just reach under the door?
It will be crushed, wet and a trip. Design a fixed circuit to a mount beside the car.
Is the loft always hotter for cables?
Cables in insulation run warmer. The designer accounts for that or chooses another route.
What about a flat roof garage?
Penetrations must stay weathertight. Agree the detail.
Can I DIY the containment and they pull the cable?
Only if they accept that split and the route meets the design. Get it agreed first.
